Community Roundtable with Senator Stabenow

MIADC organized a community roundtable with Senator Stabenow on May 21 as part of Asian American heritage month celebration. Senator Stabenow is the new chairworman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, one of the fastest growing industries in Michigan. She is also a member of several economic committees, Budget, Finance and Energy.
On arrival, Senator Stabenow went around the room meeting and shaking hands with everyone. Mahendra Kenkre introduced the Senator, describing her achievements in creating new clean energy jobs, cutting taxes, cutting red tape for small businesses, spurring high tech manufacturing, preventing Canadian trash from coming inside our broders and securing government investment to clean up and protect Great lakes.
Senator Stabenow began her address by talking about the great diversity of our country, and moved on to importance of social security and medicare, the federal budget and her work on the several committees she serves.
Questions from the audience were on a wide range of topics like immigration, federal budget deficit, funding
for National Institute of Health, her re-election campaign, weapons sale to Pakistan, etc. Tushar Oza informed the Senator about actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Downriver area that come across as acts of intimidation and racial profiling.
The one hour conversation was short but broad based and brought out the diversity of interests in the Indian community. Ratna Rao offered the vote of thanks.
